I'm having a problem using SmartMedia cards with Digi-Frame.

I am having trouble transferring pictures to my Digi-Frame using the Digi-Link software and serial cable. My computer reports errors such as "timeout" or "unable to detect the Digi-Frame".

There are several possible causes for problems with serial image transfer. Please take the following steps to avoid these issues:

1. Update to the latest version of Digi-Link for Windows or Macintosh, as appropriate. The version of Digi-Link supplied on the CD-ROM has been superseded by the version available from our web site.

2. Check the software version on your Digi-Frame. (The software version is shown at the bottom of the white "Welcome to Digi-Frame" screen when you switch the power on). If your Digi-Frame's software version is earlier than 2.50, you should update to the latest version. This is especially important if you are using SmartMedia cards, as there have been numerous improvements to SmartMedia support in recent software updates.

3. Digi-Link will be unable to connect to the frame if a program running in the background ties up your serial (COM) port. Examples of such programs include fax software and software used to sync your computer and a personal information device such as a Palm unit. This program occupies the COM port even when you are not actively using it, so that it can detect when you attach your Palm device and press the Sync button. If the culprit is the Palm HotSync software, you will see the HotSync icon (intertwined red and blue arrows) in your Windows system tray. Right-click this icon and select "Exit" before running Digi-Link to avoid conflicts.

4. MS-DOS disk formats impose an upper limit on the number of items that may reside at the top ("root") directory level of the disk structure. The exact number of items depends on what software was used to format the card, but the limit will typically be 128, 512 or at most 2048 entries.

Is the DF-390 compatible with the IBM Microdrive?

Yes, the DF-390 is fully compatible with the IBM Microdrive. However, the Microdrive requires more power than a CompactFlash card, especially while pictures are being loaded. This may cause some minor flickering in display brightness during picture loading, especially if you are running off battery power. Using the Microdrive will also result in slightly reduced battery life.

Is the DF-560 compatible with the IBM Microdrive?

The DF-560 is electrically compatible with the Microdrive. However, the CompactFlash slot in the plastic housing is only wide enough to accept Type I CompactFlash cards. The Microdrive is a Type II card, which is too thick to fit in the slot. For this reason, the Microdrive is officially unsupported on the DF-560. Some users have successfully modified their DF-560 units by filing out the CompactFlash slot, making it wide enough to accept the thicker Type II cards. If you are considering this, please be advised that it will void the warranty on your Digi-Frame product.

Are the DF-390 or DF-560 compatible with Sony's Memory Stick or miniature 3" CD-R media?

The DF-390 and DF-560 do not accept Memory Stick or CD-R media directly. Users with Memory Stick or CD-R cameras can download their pictures from the Memory Stick or CD-R to their computer, then transfer the pictures to a CompactFlash or SmartMedia card either using Digi-Link and the serial cable, or a card-reader device using USB or parallel port connection.

Your documentation says the maximum number of pictures supported by Digi-Frame is 500. Doesn't this depend on the size of the storage card? What size of storage card do I need to store 500 pictures?

: Early versions of the Digi-Frame software were limited to 500 "slots" in the slideshow. This was an internal memory limitation, regardless of the size of card being used. If you have one of these older software versions, update to software version 2.50 or later. By customer request, this software version increases the number of slideshow "slots" to as much as 4,000, depending on card layout and capacity. Some product packaging and sales documentation has not yet been updated to reflect this improvement.

If you are trying to calculate how large a card you will need to store a certain number of pictures, a rough rule of thumb is that pictures resized to our recommendation of 640x480 pixels will occupy approximately 60-70K each. This figure will, however, vary greatly depending on compression options.

What is the difference between software V1.xx and software V2.xx?

Digi-Frame operating system V1.xx is incapable of performing upgrades from SmartMedia cards. Software version 2.50 is compatible with both V1.xx and V2.xx Digi-Frame units. Upgrading your unit to this software version will give it all features, including the ability to upgrade from SmartMedia cards. If your Digi-Frame has a V1.xx software version, please download and install V2.50 or later.

I am using a Macintosh computer to put pictures onto a card. When I finish loading up the card and put it in the Digi-Frame, I am told "NO PICTURES FOUND".

Digi-Frame, like digital cameras, uses a DOS filesystem. It has to infer what is inside a file from the last three letters of the filename. If you are saving your pictures from a Macintosh, remember to add ".JPG" to the end of every picture's filename, otherwise Digi-Frame will not know they are pictures.

I have a DF-390 or DF-560, and I want to use them to display a sequence of pictures quickly to make a "movie". How can I speed it up?

The DF-390 and DF-560 are designed as still image viewing appliances. You can achieve maximum display speed by taking the following steps:

- Resize your pictures to exactly 320x240 pixels
- Ensure that the display mode is set to "Fastest"
- Use CompactFlash cards rather than SmartMedia

With these settings, you will see a new picture approximately once every 2-4 seconds. This is the fastest the display can be updated.

Do I need to have a storage card in the Digi-Frame in order to use it?

Yes, you must own at least one CompactFlash or SmartMedia card in order to display your own pictures on a DF-560 or DF-390.

I have put a few pictures on a card. These pictures were either saved from Adobe Photoshop or downloaded from the Internet. When I put this card in the Digi-Frame, either some of the pictures never appear, or the Digi-Frame restarts when it gets to a certain point in the slideshow.

If your Digi-Frame restarts when attempting to view certain pictures, please download and install the latest software version. If certain pictures are not appearing, there are several possible reasons:
1. The file may not be correctly named. You must name your images with ".JPG" or ".JPE" extensions so that Digi-Frame knows they are JPEG image files.
2. The files may be in an incompatible format. Certain types of JPEG files
- particularly "progressive" JPEG files - require a lot of memory to decompress. Digi-Frame cannot decompress all progressive JPEG files. (By default, Adobe's ImageReady program, or the "Save for the Web" option in Photoshop, will save as progressive JPEG). Convert your JPEG files to standard ("sequential") format for use with Digi-Frame.

Digi-Frame locks up and stops responding to button presses when building thumbnails. I am using a card reader attached to a Macintosh computer.

First make sure you are running the latest software version on your Digi-Frame. If this does not fix the problem, then read below.

There is a potential problem with file naming when using MacOS to write files with long names to MS-DOS-formatted CompactFlash and SmartMedia cards. It is unclear at the moment whether this bug lies in the Finder, or in PC Exchange, or in the driver for the card reader. In any case, the end result is that when you drag and drop files to the card, the card's directory may be updated by the Mac with incorrect information. Digi-Frame can become confused by these corrupted cards.

A permanent workaround is to limit your file names to 20 characters in length.

Please note that this problem will NOT occur when you use Digi-Link to transfer pictures to the card, nor will it occur on Windows machines.

More Information: This problem has been observed specifically with the Microtech DPCM-USB reader and MacOS 8.6 and 9.0, but it may apply to other hardware and operating system versions also. It appears to be caused by the Finder truncating filenames. MacOS's HFS Plus disk format now supports filenames up to 255 characters long (as does Windows), but Finder is still limited to 31 characters. This means it is possible to create a file on a Mac disk that Finder cannot properly copy to another volume.

The demo mode pictures display very quickly. Why do my memory card pictures display so slowly?

The higher the resolution of your pictures, the more time they take to decompress and display. Digi-Frame displays images in 640x480 (approximately 300K pixels) resolution. Using images of higher resolution will not display in higher quality, they will only display more slowly (and use more card memory). Set your camera to its lowest-resolution setting for images intended to be shown only on a Digi-Frame. If you want to shoot in high-resolution mode for later printing, we suggest making reduced-resolution copies using image editing software on a PC, then copying these to your memory card via our Digi-Link software or a card reader for display on your Digi-Frame.

My Digi-Frame works fine in demo mode (no cards inserted), but it will not start up when a memory card is inserted.

Some memory cards shipped with digital cameras are not completely formatted. Re-format the memory card using your camera or computer card reader (remove any images you wish to save from the card first). If this does not fix the problem, please contact technical support as you may have a hardware problem.

I put in a memory card with pictures on it but my pictures won't display.

Make sure your camera is set to store images in JPEG format. Digi-Frame only works with JPEG images.

I'm using a SmartMedia card and my camera is set to JPEG mode, but my pictures still don't show up.

Make sure the card is inserted the correct way. For the DF-560 the gold contacts must face the front of the unit, for the DF-390 they must face the rear. If this does not fix the problem, check the size of your SmartMedia card and your Digi-Frame firmware version (shown at the bottom of the startup screen). Digi-Frame software versions lower than 1.02 are compatible with SmartMedia only up to and including 8 megabytes. For larger size SmartMedia cards, you must have firmware version 1.02 or later. Watch the Software Updates page of our website for upgrade information.

Whenever I try to select a menu option by "clicking" the navigation wheel, the selection jumps to another selection.

Make sure your Digi-Frame is running the latest software; wheel performance has been considerably improved in recent software versions. If this does not fix the problem, the "rubber tire" on the control wheel may have partially slipped off the inner control wheel device, causing it to rub on the plastic housing. Rotate the control wheel a few times while gently pushing the "tire" towards the front of the unit. This should stop the rubbing and improve wheel performance.

I added more pictures to my memory card, but they're not in the slideshow.

Go to QuickView to verify that all your pictures are in fact on the card. If they are, go to Slideshow Setup to add or remove pictures from the slideshow as desired.

My camera does not have memory cards. How do I use it with Digi-Frame?

First you will need to buy a CompactFlash or SmartMedia memory card so that your Digi-Frame will have a place to store your pictures. Use the cable and software that came with your camera to download the pictures from your camera to your computer. Insert your memory card into your Digi-Frame and turn it on. The Digi-Frame will probably indicate "no pictures found" since the new card is empty. Use your Digi-Link software and cable to download your pictures from your computer to the Digi-Frame as described in the User Manual. Note: most memory cards will work fine "straight from the box", however, some cards are shipped from the factory with non-standard formatting. In this case, your card may need to be formatted before it will work in the Digi-Frame. Cards can be formatted in most digital cameras that accept cards, or with a card reader device attached to your computer. Check the Software Updates section of our website for a new version of Digi-Frame firmware that will allow formatting of cards directly in Digi-Frame.

I have only SmartMedia cards. How can I upgrade my Digi-Frame's software?

If your Digi-Frame has an operating system version less than 2.0, then you can only upgrade the software using CompactFlash cards. With version 2.03, you must use a CompactFlash card to update from 2.03k. You can, however, update with a SmartMedia card from 2.03p. Once you have updated to version 2.50, you will be able to use SmartMedia cards for future upgrades.

I am using SmartMedia cards (32Mb, 64Mb or 128Mb) and Digi-Frame does not see all the pictures on the card (For example, I know that there are 150 pictures on the card, but Digi-Frame sees only the first 120). Or, when I go into Quick View, Slideshow Setup, Picture Orientation or any other screen that displays thumbnails, I see that some thumbnails are blank gray or white blocks, or contain random color dots.

Please update your Digi-Frame's software to V1.03c or later.
